Statement on Joel Miller Release of Voter Social Security Information to Republican Officials
This morning I learned of the public release of the last four digits of social security numbers of more than 200,000 residents of Linn County by Auditor Joel Miller’s office. The Auditor’s Office released this information to officials with the Linn County Republican Party.
Auditor Joel Miller is calling the public release of the information accidental. Apparently, Joel Miller’s office was coordinating with officials from the Republican Party and a veteran staffer made the mistake of sending the highly sensitive information.
Joel Miller’s office sent the social security number information to four e-mail addresses. Mr. Miller claims to have received assurance from three of the four individuals that they have deleted the information, however he has been unable to establish contact with the fourth unknown individual.
The Auditor’s office maintains personal information for all registered voters in Linn County. As the Chief Elections Official for the county, the Auditor’s office must do a better job at protecting this information. Releasing the social security information of registered voters is inexcusable.
I will be requesting that Auditor Joel Miller keep the Board of Supervisors apprised of this situation. I will ask for regular updates from Mr. Miller until he confirms contact with the fourth individual and can assure the general public that their personal information is secure.
